BACKUP AND DISASTER RECOVERY

Remote and Local Backup: Where do you keep a copy?

A quick search for “backup” will turn up dozens of cloud solutions. These are a type of Remote Backup, where your business data is uploaded to a server far away via the internet while your business sleeps. A remote backup solution is insurance against certain types of catastrophic system failure or loss: in case of physical disasters or theft, for example, you’ll have a copy of your essential business data safe and sound and ready for download to a new computer.

Remote Backup alone, however, might not be an optimal solution for all businesses. One factor to consider is the speed of your internet connection. If your business frequently updates large volumes of data, the backup transmissions may consume an impractical amount of bandwidth. And calling upon that backup in a non-emergency scenario might be impractical for the same reason. It may take days to reacquire such large volumes of data via a standard internet connection, or the costly arrangement of alternate methods of transmission.

An Onsite Backup Solution can be a partial alternative or a complement to Remote Backup. Onsite Backup entails the installation of a dedicated server, hard drive, or other storage medium, and the configuration of appropriate backup software. An appeal of Onsite Backup is its relatively low cost and the high accessibility of your stored data. While data recovery may be time-consuming with a cloud solution, it may be comparatively rapid with an Onsite Solution. Note that an onsite Remote Backup should always be complemented with some form of Remote Backup Solution, such as a cloud solution or the periodic transportation of the storage medium a sufficient distance from the computing site, for reasons mentioned above. Also, it is essential that an Onsite Backup solution be adequately monitored and maintained. This entails the periodic review of backup logs, careful attention to system generated reports and alerts, and the download and installation of important software updates.

Most businesses do not need to be convinced of the necessity of backup, but many still fail adequately to protect themselves. They may believe that the cost will be prohibitive or that the configuration and maintenance will be difficult and obtrusive, or they find the options confusing. iPower Inception Technology can explain your options clearly and thoroughly, propose an affordable Backup Solution just right for your needs, and arrange for the implementation and monitoring to be performed with minimal interruption to your business.
